Behind the scenes: Cat Photography

Here are 5 tips on how to capture the natural beauty of your cat

Tip 1 - Play before the shoot

Get comfy with your little animal friend. Tensions of uncertainty and discomfort lead to a stressful shoot for you and your cat. Try playing a game of fetch or anything engaging you with the cat before starting your shoot. 10 minutes of playtime should be enough.

Tip 2 - Always be ready to take the shot

Shooting animals requires fast reaction times and quick adaptations to shooting conditions (Light, Angle, Background-composition). Here it helps to try to predict what your little fluffer is going to do next. Also always keep your camera around.

Tip 3 - Get their attention

We talked about playing with them beforehand, but of course you can always try and get the shot while doing so. Any type of noise helps to get them to look at you without jumping and hunting around, try baking paper or dry leaves.

Tip 4 - Don’t be afraid to put the camera to Automatic

It’s nearly always better to shoot in Manual, you get complete control over everything happening with your settings, but no matter how fast you can change the settings, the cat will be faster. A quick flip from M to Automatic can save you the shot.

Tip 5 - be aware of your background

When shooting cats, try not to get lost in your subject, always keep your composition in mind. Try to avoid busy backgrounds. Keep it simple and clean.
